GU Light Bulbs Explained: Understanding GU10, GU5.3, and GU24 Bulbs

Walk into the lighting aisle of any home improvement store, and you’ll likely see bulbs labeled GU10, GU5.3, or GU24. While they may look similar at first glance, they’re designed for different fixtures, different voltages, and different applications.

One of the most common mistakes we see at Unique Lighting & Home Decor is homeowners purchasing the wrong GU bulb because the front of the bulb looks identical to the one they’re replacing. Unfortunately, if the base doesn’t match your fixture, it simply won’t fit, or worse, it could damage your lighting system.

This guide explains what GU bulbs are, the differences between the most common types, and how to choose the correct replacement for your home.


What Does “GU” Mean?

Unlike bulb shapes such as A19, PAR30, or MR16, GU refers to the base, not the shape of the bulb.

The letters GU indicate a two-pin base where the pins have enlarged ends that either twist or push into the socket, depending on the design.

The number following “GU” indicates the distance between the center of the two pins, measured in millimeters.

For example:

  • GU5.3 = Pins are 5.3 mm apart
  • GU10 = Pins are 10 mm apart
  • GU24 = Pins are 24 mm apart

Even though the bulbs may appear similar from the front, these bases are not interchangeable.


GU5.3: The Low-Voltage Specialist

The GU5.3 base is commonly paired with MR16 bulbs and is one of the most popular choices for low-voltage lighting.

These bulbs typically operate on 12 volts, meaning the fixture uses a transformer to reduce standard household voltage.

Things to Remember

Because GU5.3 bulbs require low voltage, installing a 120-volt replacement in a 12-volt fixture—or vice versa—will not work correctly.


GU10: The Most Common Residential GU Base

The GU10 is one of the most popular spotlight bulbs found in modern homes.

Unlike GU5.3, GU10 bulbs typically operate directly on 120-volt household power and do not require a transformer.

Instead of straight pins, the base uses two locking pins that twist into the socket.
