Cabinets dramatically alter how light behaves in a space.
During framing, ceilings are open and walls are bare. Light appears evenly distributed. But once cabinetry is installed, everything changes.
How Cabinets Create Shadow Geometry
Upper cabinets extend forward from the wall plane. When recessed lights are placed too far back, the cabinet face blocks forward light projection.
The result:
- Dark countertop zones
- Increased reliance on under-cabinet lighting
- Uneven task illumination
This is one of the most common post-installation regrets.
Recessed fixtures must be positioned based on finished cabinet depth, not just ceiling symmetry.
The Island Alignment Issue
Pendant alignment over islands must consider:
- Countertop overhang
- Seating depth
- Stool placement
- Visual centering from adjacent rooms
If pendant blocking was installed before confirming final island dimensions, misalignment becomes permanent.
This is especially important in open-concept kitchens where islands serve as focal anchors.
Under-Cabinet Infrastructure
Under-cabinet lighting requires:
- Pre-run wiring
- Driver placement planning
- Cabinet-ready channels
- Proper spacing from backsplash
Retrofitting under-cabinet lighting after installation is far more invasive.
Before cabinets go in, confirm:
- Junction locations
- Switch control zones
- Dimming compatibility
- Voltage requirements
Cabinet installation does not just change aesthetics; it changes light behavior.
Lighting must anticipate finished surfaces, not construction conditions.
